Bruny Island Day Trip

Where is Bruny Island

Bruny Island is located at the southern end of Tasmania, Australia. It is actually one island comprising of two land masses that are connected by a narrow isthmus.

We have done a few day trips to Bruny both by road and water. To make the most of your day we suggest that you get on the ferry as early as possibe. The drive to the light house at south Bruny you need to allow about 1.5 hours ( give or take). We recommend you take a packed lunch with you as at the light house there are no cafes etc. To enjoy the walks and the secluded beaches as well as taking a moment having a picnic with you is always a good idea. You can pre book your picnic from Jam Packed Cafe , please order the day before and pick up is from 7am.

Head down south to Kettering and travel on the sealink ferry, with over 20 departures to the island per day during summer and is a 15-20 minute ferry crossing. Purchase your open dated ticket online and save time on arrival.

Once you drive off the ferry, we suggest heading down for coffee and something light at the Bruny Island Cheese Co. Theee are also very cheeses to sample and buy and other condiments.

Then head off bound for the Cape Bruny Lighthouse, stopping along the way as you choose to take some pics of the beautiful views.

The lighthouse is the southernmost lighthouse in Australia. The heritage-listed 1836 (first lit in 1838) lighthouse towers 114 meters above dramatic cliff tops, providing eagle-eye views of the breath-taking coastline.

There is also some amazing walking trails with 15minute walks such as the Truganini lookout right up to the Labillardiere Peninsula walk, a 14km circuit with awesome views of the southern ranges.

There are marine adventures, through Pennicott Wilderness Journeys or Bruny Island Safaris and of course places to stay if you choose – caravans, camping spots, holiday units and resorts.

Be sure to check out the Bruny Island Honey Pot, we always stock up on an array of honey’s. Also check out the Bruny Island Chocolate Co to grab some bag’s of various chcolates.Below is a list of must dos.

We’ve been a few times and had lunch at Hotel Bruny Bistro and another time Pennicott Restaurant, both were great, although Hotel Bruny gets really busy with tour’s arriving for lunch at times. The coffee rubbed porterhouse steak was a little different but quite tasty with the fries and salad.
